A Note From Our Director:
As I write this, right now, I have a patient in the hospital who will have an amputation tomorrow. I had never met him until he first came into my office, four days ago. He was complaining about a red swollen foot. Within hours, we were in the operating room for emergency surgery to try to save his foot, his leg and his life.
He is a typical person, much like you or me. He is a kind man. A hard worker. A dedicated family man nearing the age of retirement. He has people who love him, and who today are worried about him. He has a job that is trying to get along without him, while he sits in a hospital bed. He now has an open surgical wound at the end of his right foot. I have been seeing him every day.
Yesterday was my son's birthday. All of the grandparents in from out of town. Brightly colored presents, hats, even a musical candle to top his first birthday cake. Shortly after the candle was blown out, I excused myself to go see this man in the hospital and repack his open wound. I ordered morphine for him, so he wouldn't have pain when I pulled out the packing.
He has gotten better since his first surgery four days ago. He no longer has nausea and chills from the bacteria infecting him. The antibiotics are working. Now we only have to go back to the operating room. I will surgically remove all tissue that seems dead or infected. Doctors and surgeons like me prefer to call this "Limb Salvage." I call it a plain old amputation. Fancy terms won't make it hurt less.
His is the classic case of a diabetic amputation. I truly believe that any and every diabetic patient can have the knowledge, guidance, and tools to avert this horrific but all too common problem. It is also my opinion that the fact that every 30 seconds a limb is amputated is deplorable. This is a grotesque symptom of a failing health care system. Yet this is preventable.
We have created this diabetes education website because many of the diabetic patients whom I come in contact with, choose my expertise and professional guidance. They choose to work with me because I am an expert. IN them I saw a tremendous need for guidance and counsel.
I have also made all of this information available to you in the hopes that you will be able to avoid a diabetic foot amputation. I have preformed my fair share of amputations and quite honestly would be content if I never, ever performed another. Not yours or anyone else’s.
I hope that you will make yourself at home here. Browse the education pages. Take charge of your own life and your diabetes. Climb more mountains, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets. And live a great life.
